Eric Leventhal, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, has enjoyed building and managing his own private practice since 2003. Both independently and – from 2008 to 2012 – in affiliation with Park West Associates, LLC, he has focused upon the practice areas of substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. Utilizing psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT modes, and solution-focused therapies, he guides an increasing clientele of executives and managers in addressing the behavioral / psychological habits that arise within fast-paced, high-stress business settings.
During his tenure with Park West Associates, LLC, Eric partnered with the firm’s founder, Dr. Laurence Westreich, in authoring the chapter, “Intervention with the addicted person,” in Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse (American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc.: 2011), a textbook now regarded at the “Bible” for practitioners in the field of substance abuse treatment.
For more than eleven years, Eric worked on staff of Bellevue Hospital’s Outpatient Psychiatry Department as a Psychotherapist. He worked with clients challenged by substance abuse, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and personality disorders. An avid proponent of involving families in the treatment of the mentally ill, he has pioneered strategies promoting family engagement that have supported high program completion rates and slashed rates of re-hospitalization.
Prior to joining the mental health profession, Eric honed his business acumen and consulting skills as the General Manager / Business Consultant for two restaurants and as a highly effective CPA with Coopers & Lybrand as well as a boutique New York accounting firm. His early insight—that the personal dynamics of human relationships within the workplace are a key trigger for business issues and outcomes—led to Eric to pursue graduate training in Social Work at Columbia University, and to establish his practice.
In addition to his Master of Science in Social Work, Eric earned his Bachelor of Science in Commerce (Accounting emphasis) from the University of Virginia in 1984 and his Certificate in Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education in 2005. He is a licensed LCSW-R in the state of New York, with previous licensure as a CPA. He currently serves as Treasurer and on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness-New York City Metro.
